Early learning in Gisborne: choosing a centre for your child

Choosing early childhood education is one of the bigger decisions a family makes in the first few years. In Gisborne there are several licensed centres and home-based services, and most look lovely on a website — so it helps to know what actually matters before you visit.

Every centre in New Zealand operates under a licence from the Ministry of Education. That licence sets the maximum number of children, the adult-to-child ratios for each age group, and the standards for health, safety and premises. Centres are also reviewed by the Education Review Office, and follow Te Whāriki, the national early childhood curriculum, which frames learning around wellbeing, belonging, contribution, communication and exploration. Ask any centre you visit for its licence details; the numbers tell you how much individual attention your child will get.

Age grouping matters. Under-twos need calm, floor-level play, sleep spaces and primary caregiving — one familiar teacher who knows their rhythms. Older children need room to run, build, dig and negotiate with friends. At Rewanui we are licensed for 33 children with spaces for under 2s and over 2s, which keeps the centre small enough that teachers know every child, and every whānau, by name.

Ask how the day is structured. Good centres balance child-led play with predictable routines, and get children outside in all weather rather than only on fine days. Ask what happens at meal and sleep times, how nappies and toileting are handled, and how learning is documented and shared with families. At Rewanui our programme is child-led and teacher-supported, and indoor and outdoor learning flow together through the day.

Finally, ask about settling in and communication. A centre with an open door policy expects you to come in, ask questions and share what is happening at home. That partnership is what makes the first months go smoothly. Government funding such as 20 Hours ECE for three, four and five year olds is available at licensed services — ask how it applies to your hours and fees.

Questions worth asking on a visit

  • How many children are in each room, and how many teachers?
  • What do the fees cover, and is 20 Hours ECE available?
  • How do you help a child settle in during their first weeks?
  • What does a typical day look like, indoors and out?
  • How will you share my child's learning with me?
